Kulmahuoneisto kahdeksannessatoista kerroksessa. Ennen kuin olin asunut New Yorkissa, koin Merihaan betoniset elementtirakennukset kylminä ja harmaina. New Yorkissa asuin Manhattanin Alphabet Cityssä. Palatessani Helsinkiin koin yllättävää vetovoimaa Merihakaa kohtaan - veden ja talvella jään ympäröimä asuinalue, jossa luonnon ja meren voimat ovat vahvasti läsnä. Korkeat betoniset rakennukset. Luova yhteisöllinen asuinalue. Tajusin, että Alphabet Cityn tunnelmissa oli joitain samankaltaisuuksia.

Alkuperäinen pohja oli ahdas ja tunkkainen. Kaapit ja väliseinät estivät upeat näkymät. Suunnitellessani asuntoa mietin aina kohderyhmää, tulevaa asukasta. Tähän asuntoon visioin asukkaiksi luovan alan pariskunnan. He inspiroituisivat yön valoista kaupunkinäkymässä, valon ja varjon leikeistä läheisellä tehdasalueella, hiljaisuudesta sekä lumen liikkeestä jään pinnalla.

Katsoin, että tyylillisesti oli tärkeää pelkistää ja rakentaa vahvoja visuaalisia linjoja. Ajatuksissani karsin asunnosta ensin kaiken paitsi ulkoseinät. Sen jälkeen lähdin lisäämään elementtejä huomioiden kantavat rakenteet ja vesipisteet. Visiona oli rakentaa koti, joka mahdollistaisi monenlaisia toimintoja ja tunnetiloja.

Asunnon osti elokuva-alalla työskentelevä pariskunta.

A corner apartment on the 17th floor. Before I lived in New York, I felt that the prefabricated concrete buildings of Merihaka were cold and gray. In New York, I lived in Alphabet City, Manhattan. When I came back to Helsinki, I felt surprisingly attracted to Merihaka — a neighborhood surrounded by water in the summer and ice in the winter where you can feel the presence of the powers of nature and the sea. Tall concrete buildings. A creative neighborhood with a sense of community. I realized that Merihaka and Alphabet City shared some similarities.

The original floor plan was cramped and stuffy. There were cabinets and walls that blocked the fantastic views. When I design an apartment, I always think of the future owner. I envisioned this apartment being bought by a couple working in the creative industries. They’d be inspired by the city lights in the night, the light and shadows playing in the nearby industrial area, silence and snow moving on the ice.

When it came to style, I felt it was important to simplify and build strong visual lines. First I pictured the apartment with the outer walls only. After that I started adding on elements, taking into consideration the load-bearing walls and water supply points. My vision was to build a home that would enable the owners to do a variety of things and feel a variety of moods.

The apartment was bought by a couple working in the film industry.
